Structural Design & Building Engineering

Profile

The group of Structural Design & Building Engineering (SD&BE) is part of the Applied Mechanics section within the Department of Materials, Mechanics, Management & Design (3MD) at the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Geosciences (CEG) at TU Delft.

The main fields of expertise include the structural design of civil engineering (infra-)structures and the engineering of buildings and their envelopes. The group addresses a variety of structural materials (e.g. concrete, steel, glass, timber) diverse fabrication technologies (e.g. flexible formwork, additive manufacturing) and sustainability considerations (e.g. reuse and remanufacturing).

The group has strong collaborative links with other research groups within the Faculty of Civil Engineering & Sciences (CEG) and the Faculty of Architecture (BK). Also (inter)nationally, the group collaborates with renowned research institutes, engineering offices and industry partners.

Research

The research of the group of Structural Design & Building Engineering focuses on the development of novel methods and strategies for the design and construction of safe, smart and sustainable structures. The research includes the following thematic areas:

  • Safety, Resilience & Forensics
  • Digital Design & Production
  • Sustainable Design & Construction

Within these thematic areas we are active in the fields of digital fabrication, parametric design, circular design, structural glass, structural safety, forensics and several others.

Education

The group of Structural Design & Building Engineering offers several courses throughout the study Civil Engineering and Geosciences. Leading in all courses is the development of both analytical and design skills. Students learn to get from a white sheet of paper to a complete building design. Furthermore, students learn to analyse and predict the structural, physical or economical performance of their design.

Massive Open Online Course (MOOC)

Committees

On both national and international level, the group of Structural Design & Building Engineering is involved in several (standardisation) committees, conference organisations and journal editorships.
