In Memoriam: Fred Kavli

On 21 November, the Kavli Foundation announced that its founder Fred Kavli has passed away peacefully in his home in Santa Barbara at the age of 86. A philanthropist, physicist, entrepreneur, business leader and innovator, Fred Kavli established The Kavli Foundation to advance science for the benefit of humanity. Based in Southern California, the Foundation today has set up an international community of basic research institutes in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience, neuroscience, and theoretical physics.

One of these institutes is the Kavli Institute of Nanoscience at the Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. Prof. Cees Dekker, director of the Institute says: "Science has lost one of its great supporters, a wonderful personality and a very special person. Fred Kavli committed himself fully to the advancement of fundamental science. He visited Delft when our Institute was initiated, and we kept in close contact since then. We will miss him and continue the nanoscience that he loved so much ."

Dirk Jan van den Berg, President of the Board reflects: "The university has been truly inspired by the energy and vision of Fred Kavli, a great personality. Although I am very sad that Fred Kavli has passed away, I am also certain that the university will continue its groundbreaking work on Nanoscience in his spirit.'
