MSc Media and Knowledge Engineering 

The Master of Science programme Media and Knowledge Engineering offers two curricula: Media and Knowledge Engineering (MKE) and the Bioinformatics (BI) specialisation.

Media & Knowledge Engineering

In today’s society more and more digital data become available as a result of a variety of electronical, biochemical, medial, industrial and other sensing devices and communication systems (Internet, TV, PC, telecommunications). Examples of such data are audio and speech signals, digital images and video, text, and bio molecular data. To interact with machines that handle and process these volumes of data and to interact with the data itself, intelligent representation, processing, reasoning and user interfaces become increasingly important. Media and Knowledge Engineering educates engineers who are able to design and build intelligent systems for information and knowledge processing and who are able to design, realize and test properly working intelligent user interfaces. The master MKE offers the following specializations:

Computer Graphics

Computer graphics deals with technical aspects of modelling and visualization of three- and higher-dimensional data. It covers many application areas, in particular computer-aided design, robotics, computational fluid dynamics, support of medical procedures, virtual and augmented reality, and geographical information systems.

Intelligent Information Processing

Media refers to (digital) signals that contain information such as speech, text, music images, and video. Intelligent information processing deals with the processing and interpretation of media data. Examples are how to extract information from the data e.g. for efficiently searching of visual databases, and how to efficiently represent data for storage and transmission (coding).

Man-Machine Interaction

Man-machine interaction is focusing on intelligent multimodal systems with the view of optimal performance and satisfaction of the user. This specialisation educates students in user interface design, speech recognition, facial expression recognition, dialogue management, user profiling and task management, context sensitivity and intelligent agents. Artificial intelligence techniques play a dominant role.

Bioinformatics

Bioinformatics involves research, development, and application of computational tools and approaches for expanding the use of biological, medical, behavioural and health data, including approaches to acquire, store, organize, archive, analyse, or visualize such data. Bioinformatics includes computational biology: the development and application of data-analytical and theoretical methods, mathematical modelling and computational simulation techniques to the study of biological, behavioural, and social systems. It is the science of the use of mathematical, statistical and computational techniques to extract meaning from biological, biochemical and biophysical data. Bioinformatics integrates concepts and methods from both mathematics and computer science with (molecular) biology and biochemistry.
