Information Systems Design
You are now visiting the website of the section Information Systems Design of the Department of Information Systems Algorithms (ISA).
The head of the section is Prof. Dr. Ir. Jan L. G. Dietz.
The object of interest of the section Information Systems Design is information systems in organizations. Viewed from the function perspective, these systems support the business actions of human actors as well as the coordination of these actions. Viewed from the construction perspective, information systems are discrete event systems, realized by means of ICT (information and communication technology). The continuous alignment of the function perspective and the construction perspective on information systems constitutes the scientific problem addressed by the section Information Systems Design. As the major conceptual framework, a four-tier-architecture is adopted, the tiers being information (the data and document bases as well as the networks), action (the decision and judgment rules), presentation (the human computer interface) and coordination (the business transactions and processes). The empirical field consists of the actual business and governmental organizations; they constitute our laboratory.
The topics, currently investigated in research projects, include:
-
Enterprise Modeling & Architectures
-
Business Process Optimization
-
Information Systems Modeling & Architectures
-
Component-based Systems Engineering
-
Digital Longevity
-
Workflow Management
The members of the section Information Systems Design teach courses in all these subjects, not only in the Technical Informatics curriculum but also in other curricula of Delft University of Technology, like Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, and Aircraft & Space Technology.
