The MOOC ‘Rethink the City: New Approaches to Global and Local Urban Challenges’ is awarded with the 2017 AESOP ‘Excellence in Teaching’ Award. AESOP is the Association of European Schools of Planning and the award aims to promote innovative planning education and disseminate high quality teaching practices among European planning schools.

‘Rethink the City’ is the first course from the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of TU Delft that has received this award. Additionally, it is the first time AESOP recognizes the excellence of an online course.

As a bottom-up initiative of PhD candidates Igor Pessoa (PhD candidate from OTB) and Luz María Vergara (PhD candidate from MBE), the course focuses on urban challenges of the Global South and so far, has had more than 10.000 enrolments. Making it the biggest course ever organized by the faculty alone. The program is divided into three thematic modules: Housing Provision and Management, Urban Resilience and Spatial Justice. The collective expertise from this Faculty is combined in seven weeks of intense debate. Besides having 11 PhDs from different departments, several other academics from BK lecture in the course, including Roberto Rocco (Urbanism), Darinka Czischke (MBE), Dominic Stead (Urbanism), Ana Maria Fernandez-Maldonado (Urbanism), Vincent Nadin (Urbanism) and Willem Korthals Altes (OTB).
