IEEE ITS Institutional Lead Award for Bart van Arem

Nieuws - 31 oktober 2017

Prof. Bart van Arem has won the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Institutional (ITS) Lead Award. Van Arem got the price October 17th during the IEEE 20th Conference on ITS in Yokohama, Japan. The main focus of the awarded programme is the scientific study of complex interaction between automated vehicles. This includes the interaction with drivers, traffic flows and transport networks.

Several professors from around the world recommend Van Arem for the IEEE ITS Institutional Lead Award. They recommend Van Arem because of his research into problems with real-world significance. They indicate that if Van Arem’s name is on the list of contributors, they know for sure that studying the paper is worthwhile. It was also mentioned that van Arem inspired collaboration with industrial and governmental parties such as the Federal Highway Association and the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs.

Overall this led to Bart van Arem’s nomination for the IEEE ITS award. The IEEE society in the end decided to give the TU Delft research programme led by Bart van Arem the IEEE ITS Institutional Lead Award.

Van Arem became involved into Intelligent Transportation Systems early on, his early work in the 1990s is about Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) and how such a system can lead to smoother traffic at low traffic volumes, but that it can become counterproductive at higher traffic volume rates. Later on his work extended towards Cooperative Adaptive Cruise Control (CACC) and the whole field of ITS. More about Van Arem, such as publications and educational activities, can be found here
