ShanghaiRanking: 3rd place for TU Delft

 The Shanghai Ranking 2018 published its ranking of academic subjects. In Transportation Science & Technology TU Delft has been awarded the 3rd place. In total, our university got 266,0 points. Two Chinese universities, Beijing Jiaotong University and Tsinghua University, ended up in first and second place. In the subjects ranking of 2017, the TU Delft held first place. 

The total score of 266,0 points is a combination of different indicators. For each indicator the top scoring university gets all points, the remaining universities are calculated as a percentage of it. To arrive at the sub score for each indicator, the square root of the percentage is taken and multiplied by the specific weight factor.

For the Transportation Science & Technology subject four different indicators are used. The first is PUB, it is the number of papers authored by an institution during the period 2012-2016. Data is collected from Web of Science and InCites. PUB has an indicator weight of 100. TU Delft is the top scoring institution for this indicator, with 100 points.

The second indicator is CNCI, the Category Normalized Citation Impact is the ratio of citations of papers published during period 2012-2016 to the average citations of papers (same category). Data is collected from InCites, the indicator weight is also 100. For this indicator, TU Delft got 67,5 points. The top scoring institution is Peking University, China. 

Third indicator is IC, international collaboration. It is determined by taking the number of publications that have been found with at least two different countries in the addresses of the authors, divided by the total number of publications for the university during 2012-2016. Data is from InCites, the indicator weight is 20. TU Delft got a score of 70,1 for international collaboration. King Abdulaziz University, Saudi Arabia is the top scoring institution. 

Finally, the last indicator is TOP. TOP is the number of papers published in Top Journals for an institution during the period 2012-2016. Top 20% journals are defined as their Journal Impact Factors in the top 20% of each Web of Science category according to Journal Citation Report (JCR) 2016. The indicator has a weight of 100. Top scoring institution is Beijing Jiaotong University, China. TU Delft got 84,4 points.
