Giulia Giordano receives Veni grant
‘Interconnected systems governed by nonlinear dynamics are ubiquitous in physics, biology and engineering. Studying their dynamic behaviour is fundamental to understand and control the phenomena around us. An example is dynamic spreading of diseases, cyberattacks or opinions in our hyper-connected world: predicting the evolution of epidemics and containing contagion, or fake news, is crucial.’ Giulia says.
Giulia’s research will be focused on the study of nonlinear dynamical networks, which is extremely challenging due to their complexity and due to the poor knowledge of the exact models and parameter values. ‘However, some fundamental dynamic behaviours of interconnected systems in nature are preserved despite huge parameter variations and rely exclusively on the system interconnection structure. - Giulia says - My goal is therefore to develop a new parameter-independent approach to analyse and control whole classes of nonlinear dynamical networks, exclusively based on their structure.’
Since many problems across disciplines can be cast in the proposed framework, the outcomes will be widely applicable. ‘Structural approaches can be devised to perform control and coordination of nonlinear interconnected systems in science and engineering. I am particularly interested in systems biology and synthetic biology, where structural results can help streamline the analysis and the design of biomolecular feedback systems.’
Veni grants are awarded annually by the Dutch Research Council (NWO) within the Talent Scheme, which offers individual grants to talented, creative researchers, thus enabling them to conduct the research of their choice. The Talent Scheme has three funding instruments (Veni, Vidi and Vici) tailored to various phases in researchers' scientific careers. Veni is targeted at outstanding researchers who have recently obtained their PhD. They are at the start of their scientific career and display a striking talent for scientific research. The NWO selects Veni laureates based on the quality of the researcher, the innovative character of the proposed research, the expected scientific impact of the research proposal and possibilities for knowledge utilisation.
