Research interests:

The main themes in my research are (i) the development of advanced optical methods for measuring fluid flow and (ii) the investigation and characterization of turbulent flow with particular emphasis on turbulent flow near walls. I have developed Tomographic-PIV, which is a popular 3D experimental approach nowadays. The study of turbulent flow near walls combines many fundamental turbulence research questions with practical relevance. The major scientific challenge in this area of fluid mechanics is to acquire a deep fundamental understanding of the interaction between the various flow scales and structures. This is what I focus on, and it refers to both the instantaneous spatial relationship as well as the dynamical interplay between structures, which sustains the turbulence.Results are applied in investigations of the dispersion of air pollution in urban areas and heat transfer.
