New project SAM-FMS studies scheduling in cyber-physical systems

Onderzoekers van de TU Delft hebben twee bestaande technieken binnen de superresolutie-microscopie gecombineerd tot een nieuwe methode. Veel experts zagen het combineren van de technieken als iets dat technisch onmogelijk was. Met de nieuwe, gecombineerde methode kunnen onderzoekers de minuscule onderdelen van levende cellen beter dan ooit in beeld brengen. Dat kan onder meer leiden tot nieuwe inzichten in de gezondheidszorg.

De Nederlandse Organisatie voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek (NWO) heeft deze week aan twaalf Delftse wetenschappers de Veni-beurzen van maximaal 250.000 euro toegekend. Binnen de faculteit 3mE zijn er maar liefst drie laureaten: Miguel Bessa (Materials Science and Engineering), Mark van de Ruit (Biomechatronics & Human-Machine Control) en Giulia Giordano (Delft Center for Systems and Control).

The IFAC Symposium on Large Scale Complex Systems (IFAC LSS) is a core triennial event of IFAC Technical Committee on Large Scale Complex Systems. The George Nicholson Student Paper Competition, arguably the most prestigious student award in the operations research community, is held each year since 1975 to honor outstanding student papers in the field of operations research and the management sciences. Viet Anh, a visiting PhD student at TU Delft and co-supervised by Peyman Mohajerin Esfahani, is the first winner from a European university. He received the 2018 Nicholson Award for the paper “Distributionally Robust Inverse Covariance Estimation: The Wasserstein Shrinkage Estimator”.

In today’s TU Delft TV video, Temitope Agbana explains how to detect a tropical disease by a smartphone. Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease which accounts for almost 200,000 deaths a year and affects over 285 million people worldwide.

PhD researcher Temitope Agbana and Professor Gleb Vdovine from the 3ME faculty have developed a novel technique, which utilizes optical analysis of patient blood samples using automated smart algorithms integrated into a potentially low-cost multispectral optical imaging platform. With this technique, they aim at the development of a portable, field compatible, affordable smart optical diagnostic instrument for early detection of African Animal Trypanosomiasis and other Hemoparasitic infection in animals. A smart parasite detector for animals: automated, rapid reliable diagnosis which requires minimal human intervention.
