Ship Design Production and Operation

The Ship Design, Production & Operation (SDPO) research group covers research related to design, engineering, production, repair and operation of ships and other floating marine objects including their machinery and electric equipment. This also includes research on supporting topics such as logistics, management, finance, technical marketing, sustainability and shipping management.

Research is done through projects funded by The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), Joint Industry Projects with Dutch industrial and academic partners, EU-funded research programmes, PhD scholarships and direct cooperation with national and international public organizations.

The Interreg North-West Europe project H2SHIPS will demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of hydrogen bunkering and propulsion for shipping and will identify the conditions for successful market entry for the technology. Two pilot projects will be implemented as part of H2SHIPS: A new hydrogen powered port vessel will be built in Amsterdam and in Belgium a H2 refuelling system suitable for open sea operation will be developed and tested. A further major output will be an action plan for the implementation of an H2SHIPS pilot on the river Seine in Paris in 2022. H2SHIPS will demonstrate the added-value of H2 for water transport and develop a blueprint for its adoption across North-West Europe, avoiding considerable GHG-emissions.

The Project has a total budget of € 6.33 million and receives € 3,47 million from from Interreg North-West Europe between 2019 and 2022. H2SHIPS has 13 Partners from 5 countries and is coordinated by Europäisches Institut für Energieforschung. TU Delft supports the hydrogen pilot project in Amsterdam with modelling of the propulsion system and analysis of the performance of the ship. TU Delft supports the project too with the analysis of the hydrogen ecosystem development in the demonstrator regions.
