Safety Precautions in Electrical Systems of Human Conveyance Equipment

Research of Elena Rogova

Reliability and safety of machines is a very important and topical task in any field of industry. Some of these machines are mechanical type. Others are a combination of mechanical and electrical/electronic equipment. Now more and more mechanical safety systems of these machines are replaced by electrical/electronic devices or equipped with redundancy in order to improve quality, safety and reliability. But in the most cases there are no criteria of replacement/redundancy of mechanical safety system with electrical/electronic safety system. That’s also unknown that the system became more reliable and safe after applying redundancy/replacement.

Goals of the research

  • Development of the unified criteria of replacement/redundancy of mechanical safety system with electrical/electronic safety system
  • Development of the reliability analysis method for combined systems (mechanical+electrical/electronic)
  • Application of the developed method for people transportation equipment (elevators/escalators/moving walks)

Application

The application area of the developed method is various. It can be applied to different types of machines and systems. In this research, application is planned to be conducted on a mechanical safety system of people transportation equipment (elevators/escalators/moving walks).

Approach

The main approach of the research is a concept of functional safety. Risk analysis, safety integrity level determination and combination of different methods of reliability analysis are essential parts of the research.

Funding

This research is financially supported by LiftInstituut, Amsterdam.
