TUDelft RFID Research and Realization (TUD3R) laboratory

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a technology that is conquering the world every day. Academic studies lack on the matter of modern transport and logistic applications and therefore the TU Delft has started the RFID Research and Realization Laboratory (TUD3R) since 2006.  

 The TUD3R-lab has set itself the following goals:

  • Stimulating the use of RFID by developing a generic applicable readability model for RFID applications;
  • Developing innovative RFID-technology to provide the supporting functions in different transport and production fields.

To achieve these goals the lab has state-of-the-art RFID technology present. This equipment will be used to research the applicability of RFID in the near future. And the lab will also be used to test fundamental new and improved RFID parts (tags and equipment).

To increase the visibility within transport and production processes as well as logistic chains is the main research goals of this laboratory. During the last years the laboratory has obtained a great knowledge on the field of RFID-systems. Different PhD research projects and MSc graduation projects have been done in this field of research:

  • Production and logistics (Sony)
  • Biggest RTLS-system in the world (Broekman)
  • Integration of RFID in conveyors (Ammeraal Beltech).
  • Localization of parts (KLM Engineering)
  • RFID in cross-border e-commerce (PostNL)
  • Utilization and occupation of buildings (TUDelft)
  • Energy harvest for active RFID (SKF)
  • Service and maintenance (NedTrain)
  • Smart idlers (Rulmeca)
  • Search and rescue (TNO)
  • Tracing and tracking medical instrument (CZE)
  • Baggage self-check-in (Type22)

The TUD3R lab has the latest generation of RFID equipment and tags at its disposal and with the help of leading companies the short-term usability of RFID will be improved. This is done by developing a generic readability model which makes it possible to define the specifications for the RFID system in advance.

Besides the development of the readability model, the lab also researches the fundamental improvement of integrating RFID in goods and systems. This to ensure a significant improvement of service and maintenance against a competing price.
