Metamaterials (MMs) are those that exhibit peculiar behavior not usually found in nature by means of an engineered (micro)structure. MMs open the door to new applications, and therefore their contribution to our societal development is inevitable. The development of MMs is an active research field with applications ranging from energy-harvesting to cloaking (shielding an object from light, sound, and even earthquakes). At SOM we are interested in developing the numerical techniques that are required to design the next generation of metamaterials. With a unique blend of advanced discretization and optimization techniques, SOM takes MM design to the next level.
