Better Airport Regions (BAR)

The two year BAR research project started in June 2012 is part of both the NWO program ā€˜Urban Regions in the Deltaā€™ (URD) and the NWO program ā€˜Verbinden van Duurzame Stedenā€™ (VerDuS). In this research airport regions of international hub airports are investigated. Main focus is on the case of Schiphol and the (greater-) Amsterdam metropolis, within an international comparative approach with Zurich as main reference case. The project starts from a joint perspective on essential flows (energy, water, materials, food and mobility), urban development and spatial quality on the metropolitan level, and governance.

The core hypothesis is that an enhanced reciprocity between the airport and its surrounding metropolitan region can facilitate a transformation path towards more sustainable, better airport regions. To assess the implied potential and risk of such a complex and manifold issue, the project combines empirical and design research to frame the investigation.

The aim of the project is to deliver guidelines for decision-makers in policy, industry, and academia; to provide a better conceptual model for the integration of airports and cities; and to produce transformation scenarios to enable a broad discussion on the future of airport regions.

Partners in this project, besides of ETD chair (Department of Urbanism) and CD&S chair within the Faculty of Architecture TU Delft, are the Faculty of Technology, Policy and Management of TU Delft, University of Amsterdam (Human Geography, Planning and International development), ETH Zurich (Architecture and Urban Design), TU Munchen (Sustainable Urbanism,  Spatial Development and Regional Economics; Faculty of Architecture & Spatial) and TU Munchen (Urban Structure and Transport Planning, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geodesy).

ETD contact for this project: Arjan van Timmeren (A.vanTimmeren@tudelft.nl) or Egbert Stolk (E.H.Stolk@tudelft.nl).
