Future Node: Amsterdam Sloterdijk 2050

Amsterdam - like many cities worldwide - is facing key challenges such as rapid growth, congestion and social segregation. As the center of Amsterdam is overburdened, the Amsterdam Sloterdijk area is currently desolate and dysfunctional.

The proposal ‘Future Node’ seeks to kickstart strategic urban development in Amsterdam Sloterdijk and alleviate pressures on the city center, whilst strengthening the city’s overall mobility network.

Amsterdam Sloterdijk has the potential to become a key location for transferring between outer-city and the inner-city transportation networks. The divisive ground-based railway tracks are redirected over two existing flyovers, establishing a unique railway configuration (with three station entrances) that provides new opportunities for multi-modal interconnections. Underneath the tracks, a 320m-diameter multi-lane roundabout elegantly directs the car, bicycle and pedestrian flows of the surrounding areas, and creates an optimal drop-off interface for autonomous pods. Within this roundabout the ring-shaped building seamlessly connects the three stations and provides the critical urban mass (over 450.000m2 of parking & mixed-use program) for the area to develop. In contrast to typical nodal developments the epicenter is kept completely open, forming a multifunctional public space as vivid heart of this new neighborhood.
