New National Bank of Belgium

The New National Bank of Belgium is the proposal for the transformation of the National Bank of Belgium in Brussels. focusing on the adaptive re-use of this vast, complex, existing building, it aims to become a bank that is more open and permeable for both the public and those working in the building. Its function remains as a very large bank and office building. However new functions such as a public exhibition hall and a public storeroom on the ground floor make the building more accessible for people outside the banking world. Reconfiguring, undressing and displacing are the three actions proposed for the strategy of this design. Reconfiguration renews its problematic interior hierarchy. Undressing opens up the existing building to the point where the structure of the building becomes visible again. Displacement of technical elements enables the emergence of a new work culture.
