Dr. M.H. Kolstein

Since 1971 Henk Kolstein is employed at the Stevin Laboratory of the faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences at the Delft University of Technology. He received his PhD from the Delft University of Technology in 2007.

In his current position of Associate Professor, he is involved in a variety of research projects dealing with the behaviour of steel structures; fibre reinforced polymer structures and normalization of building standards. He is daily supervisor of several PhD researchers and Postdoc researchers and lecturer of several MSc courses.

He is author or co-author of 65 scientific publications and international reports and more than 110 national publications and national reports. He is a member of several national and international committees of investigation and standardization.

Research

His research interest can be summarized in the following topics:

  • Renovation techniques and fatigue assessment of orthotropic steel bridge decks
  • Monitoring of existing structures and there loadings
  • Fatigue behaviour of steel structures
  • Structural behaviour of very high strength steels up to S1100
  • Fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) composites in structural applications

In general the research is both fundamental and applied. For the experimental part a research laboratory is available with a wide range of equipment for conducting experiments and tests on (large scale) structures and structural components. The testing equipment consists of a large number of test rigs and a test frame system which can be built in any suitable arrangement to accommodate the required (large scale) test set up. The hydraulic jack capacity varies between 50 and 10,000 kN. The equipment is fully computerised and so is the data-acquisition and data-processing. Special is the strong floor available to perform fatigue testing.
