Op 1 september 2020 stortte een deel van de kade aan de Grimburgwal in Amsterdam in. De belangrijkste oorzaken blijken de afwijkende opbouw van de smalle kade, de lokaal diepere bodemligging en verzwakking van het metselwerk door aanvaringen. Dat blijkt uit onderzoek van een onderzoeksteam samengesteld uit deskundigen van TU Delft, Deltares, AMS Institute en SkyGEO, onder leiding van Mandy Korff (TU Delft/Deltares), en op aanvraag van de gemeente Amsterdam. Het rapport met conclusies en aanbevelingen voor andere kademuren van de stad is op 8 april 2021 gepubliceerd door de gemeente Amsterdam.

Hadi Hajibeygi (GSE) heeft dit jaar de InterPore Award for Porous Media Research gekregen voor zijn uitmuntende onderzoek op het gebied van poreuze media. De InterPore Award wordt slechts aan één persoon per jaar uitgereikt die heeft aangetoond aanzienlijke vooruitgang te hebben geboekt op theoretisch, experimenteel en/of modelleringsgebied bij het begrijpen van problemen waarbij natuurlijke of industriële poreuze media zijn betrokken.

Hadi Hajibeygi was awarded €7500,- from a faculty fund in support of his initiative GeoScience & GeoEnergy Webinar series, to make science accessible for a wider audience.

The project will investigate the effects of biochar on the performance of microbial CH4 oxidation in biofilters to reduce landfill gas emissions.

During the Award Ceremony of the 82nd EAGE Conference & Exhibition, Dr Quinten Boersma received the 2020 EAGE Norman Falcon Award. His paper ‘Linking natural fractures to karst cave development: a case study combining drone imagery, a natural cave network and numerical modelling’, was chosen as the best paper published in Petroleum Geoscience in 2019.

In March 2020, Dominique Ngan-Tillard and Deyan Draganov were approached by the foundation Jewish Westland, who manages the cemetery in Naaldwijk, and asked whether it would be possible to use non-invasive geophysical methods to look for possible tombstones lying under the ground surface of the cemetery.
