Ir. M. (Maaike) Izeboud

I’m a PhD student at the department of Geoscience and Remote Sensing, where I did my master as well. I have a bachelor in Civil Engineering. My main interest is in the cryosphere, focussed on the Greenland and Antarctic ice sheets.

My PhD focuses on damage at the Antarctic ice shelves. We’re developing an automated approach to detect fractures from multi-source remote sensing data (both optical & SAR), using machine learning. Also, we aim to analyse and quantify the impact and feedback of damage on the ice shelves stability, using an ice sheet model.

During my master I studied the effects of cloud radiation on the Greenland and the Antarctic ice sheets, using both satellite (CloudSat-CALIPSO) and climate model (RACMO) data to perform simulations with the snow model SNOWPACK.

Research themes:

  • Cryosphere
  • Remote Sensing
  • Machine learning (Convolutional Neural Networks)
  • Ice sheet modelling
