Alex Curran is a PhD researcher in the field of flood risk including dike breaching, as part of the EU System Risk project. His time is split between Deltares and TU Delft, both of whom are partners in the project.
The overall project System-Risk is a Marie-Skłodowska-Curie European Training Network which aims to develop and implement a systems approach for large-scale flood risk assessment and management. Alex’ research sits within Work-Package 2: ‘River-Dike-Floodplain system’.
The specific research seeks to improve the methods for quantifying the effect of dike breaches on large-scale river systems, looking at aspects of breach triggering, floodplain interactions and resulting economic risk. The main case studies are the Rhine and Po Rivers.
Alex is an Irish graduate of Civil Engineering from NUI Galway, and holds an MSc in Flood Riks Management from UNESCO-IHE.
