Profile

KAREL TERWEL (1975) studied Civil Engineering at Delft University of Technology (DUT) and graduated in 2001. From 2001 until 2007 he worked as a structural designer/ project leader at Zonneveld Engineers on complex structural designs like two office towers (height: 146m) for the government in The Hague (awarded Dutch concrete prize 2013) and the Palace for music in Utrecht. Since 2007 he has been a lecturer (from 2015: assistant professor) focusing on structural design and safety at DUT. He teaches courses in structural design and in forensic engineering.

Terwel finished his PhD on human and organizational factors influencing structural safety in 2014. Apart from this research, his research interest focuses on causes of structural damage.

In 2013 Terwel founded Coenraedt B.V. He is committed to providing consultancy in investigations of structural failures, second opinions and structural risk management. He is vice-chair of IABSE’s TG5.1 Forensic Structural Engineering and member of the editorial advisory board of ICE’s journal Forensic Engineering. 

Experience

April 2001-november 2007: Structural engineer at Zonneveld Engineers in Rotterdam. Structural coordinator of the design of 2 high rise towers of 146m for the municipality of justice and home affairs in The Hague and of the design of “Het Muziekpaleis” in Utrecht.

November 2007-now: Lecturer and researcher Structural Design and Safety at TU Delft. Currently: Assistant Professor structural design and safety at Faculty of Civil Engineering and Geosciences of TU Delft. Domain coordinator structural safety at Delft Safety and Security Institute (DSyS). 

December 2014-now: founder of Coenraedt B.V., consultancy in investigations of structural failures, second opinions and structural risk management.

Research

My PhD focused on human and organizational factors influencing structural safety. Currently my research focus is on forensic engineering. Forensic engineers intend to determine causes of failure and try to reproduce a sequence of events that lead to failure. At the moment I am involved in developing a method to reliably assess the cause of damage of masonry buildings in Groningen. Furthermore, I am involved in a project that intends to quantify the human and organizational factors that influence the safety of building elements, like floors and facades. Moreover, I am coordinator Structural Safety of Delft Safety and Security Institute, that aims to connect academia and practice to find solutions for issues regarding safety and security. In that role, I was also one of the founders of TUDelft Forensics, a community of forensic engineers within TU Delft.

Other research interests are high rise structures, floating structures and sustainable structural design.
