Profile

Lin Xiao received the M.Sc. degree in Transportation Planning and Management from Tongji University, China in 2013. She is currently working as a Ph.D. researcher in the Departement of Transport & Planning at Delft University of Technology, the Netherlands. Her research interests include the modelling of automated vehicles in microscopic traffic simulations and the impacts of automated vehicles on traffic flow performance. She modelled the behaviour of cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) vehicles taking the degraded system operation and system-driver interaction into account. The developed model is integrated into a microscopic simulation MOTUS and is applied to a realistic traffic corridor with multiple interacting bottlenecks. Her research provides reliable traffic impact assessments of CACC vehicles at the macroscopic level and gives an insight into the interaction of automated vehicles and the traffic flows of conventional vehicles.

Research

Cooperative adaptive cruise control (CACC) is an automated longitudinal control system that is highly expected to increase the traffic efficiency. My research aims to model the CACC vehicles and develop strategies for CACC vehicle strings in a realistic traffic environment to fulfil the expectation. Operational strategies will be specified in particular scenarios such as low automated vehicle market penetration rates, dedicated lanes and a merging bottleneck.
