Ir. Wim Luxemburg
In the year 2000, ir. Willem M.J. Luxemburg joined the Chair of Hydrology of Delft University of Technology. He had graduated from the same faculty in 1983 and at that time almost immediately left abroad, where he has always worked in the field of hydrology. He stayed in Mozambique, Yemen and Zimbabwe, stationed at central Government Institutes and in Yemen additionally at Sana’a University for two years. Summarizing, he was involved in water resources availability assessments at catchment level, reservoir operation, flood control and warning, geohydrological and hydrological measurements, and water resources information (network maintenance, data capturing, screening, archiving) . At Sana’a University he was course leader in Post Graduate courses in Hydrology and involved in curriculum development for water specializations.
As a staff member of DUT he specialized in research and education related to the processes of rainfall and runoff generation. For this purpose field experimental activities were initiated in the Netherlands (Eilandspolder, NH) and the Rhine catchment (Luxembourg). At experimental sites specific research is employed to identify hydrological processes like evaporation from interception, transpiration (using sapflow), runoff generation from roads, subsurface runoff in hill slopes (applying tracer techniques), and groundwater response to polder level variation. Master of Science students in Hydrology at DUT are guided in fieldwork now at these experimental sites and also frequently engage in thesis work related to the activities..
Mr. Luxemburg frequently engages in national and international projects. Stochastic hydrology for extremes is a field he specialized in through the project “Statistical properties of flood runoff of North Eurasian rivers under conditions of climate change”, a cooperation between the Chair of Hydrology ant three Russian hydro-climatological institutes.
Mr. Luxemburg lectures in courses of Hydrology and Hydrometry at Bachelor of Science and Master of Science level.
