Infrastructure design and safety

How can the road infrastructure design be self-explaining? Which infrastructural cues road users use, and which factors in the road environment dictate the behaviour of road users? How can we design infrastructure that can accommodate safely the future changes in the traffic mix (automated and non-automated road users)?

Johan Vos: Driver expectations in freeway curve driving

This research with a focus on human factors aims to develop a behavioural model of drivers’ speed anticipation with respect to curves. This model could be the basis for a new design philosophy where freeway curves are designed based on speed choice by the driver, not on mechanical factors. This research aims to build a bridge between freeway design and human factors research. It will mainly focus on human factors methods to investigate driver behaviour.
