Personal grants form the basis for your scientific career nowadays, but they are very hard to win.Personal grants form the basis for your scientific career nowadays, but they are very hard to win.

Knowing this, dr. Maria Santofimia Navarro applied for a personal grant in three programmes: TU Delft Technology Fellowships for female scientists, the Dutch innovation research incentive Vidi and the European ERC Starters Grants programme. In all three the chance of success is less than 10%, but by applying to all three ones chances rise to 27%; the probability of getting all three is less than one in one thousand.

Maria Santofimia has, as M2i-researcher, built up an excellent CV, has become internationally renowned because of her research on steel microstructures and has the overview and expertise to propose excellent research programmes. In her proposals she plans to investigate the role of non-equilibrium phases in the formation processes that make the microstructures of advanced steels. Maria as well as her plans are of such high quality that she has won all three grants for 5-year research programmes! Since October 1, 2012, she holds a position as assistant professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at TU Delft and she is building up her own research group on the basis of the ERC- and Vidi-programmes. An excellent and well-deserved result, with which we congratulate Maria, wishing her the very best in her scientific career.
