PEARL: the new instrument at the Reactor Institute

News - 13 January 2016 - Communication TNW

Curious about the research taking place at the Reactor Institute? The research reactor has recently been expanded with a new instrument: PEARL. TU Delft TV visited PEARL for one of its episodes.

PEARL uses neutrons from the reactor to reveal the atomic structure deep beneath the surface of materials. PEARL can, for instance, show researchers the changes taking place in batteries as these charge and discharge. This new instrument reinforces materials research in every sense of the word. Society needs technological solutions for sustainable energy in which new storage and conversion materials play a crucial role. PEARL, the neutron powder diffractometer was built to be able to understand and develop such materials.
