Cement free concrete canoe most heavy and sustainable boat

A team of Delft students from the U-base fraternity has won two awards at the annual concrete canoe race that took place in Arnhem from 27 – 29 May. Their concrete canoe weighs 250 kilos and is the heaviest canoe of this year’s race. Most importantly, the team was given the award for most sustainable canoe because of the extraordinary material the canoe was made of.

The boat was made out of geopolymer concrete, in which cement as a binder is replaced with a mixture of alkaline and industrial by-products such as fly ash or blast furnace slag. This makes geopolymer concrete a sustainable alternative to traditional concrete.
