Leiden-Delft-Erasmus universities put 90 international post-docs to work

News - 04 February 2016 - Webredactie Communication

Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam, together with Erasmus University Medical Centre and Leiden University Medical Centre, have been awarded a European Marie Curie COFUND subsidy worth 6.3 million euros for a post-doc fellowship programme. This ‘LEaDing Fellow Post-doc Programme’ will provide more than 90 researchers who recently obtained a PhD, with the opportunity to gain two years of work experience in a challenging, internationally acclaimed environment.

LEaDing Fellow Programma

The post-docs will work primarily in multidisciplinary research projects embedded in the three universities and their medical centres; with possibilities to collaborate with businesses and public organisations, mainly in the region. The LEaDing Fellow Programme will provide opportunities in the wide range of disciplines offered by the three universities: from archaeology to civil engineering, from nanotechnology to law, from Korean studies to sustainable energy technology, and from economics to medicine. This could also include the complex social themes that the multidisciplinary Leiden-Delft-Erasmus Centres and Medical Delta focus on, from big data for urban development to the ageing of the population, European economic and financial governance, sustainability, public health and safety and global cultural heritage. The candidates are required to submit a project proposal to one of the universities or university medical centres.

New career prospects

Prof. Karel Luyben, Rector Magnificus of TU Delft, the coordinating university: ‘Cooperating with non-academic partners such as established businesses, start-up technology companies, government authorities and other public organisations can open up new career prospects for these post-docs.’ The young researchers will be introduced to their supervisors’ networks but also invited to make their own contacts in public and private organisations in the region.

Joint programme

Delft University of Technology will take the lead in organising this joint programme. Leiden University, Delft University of Technology and Erasmus University Rotterdam have already worked together for many years in various fields of education, research and valorisation. Their partnership was extended and formalised through the Leiden-Delft-Erasmus strategic alliance in 2012.
