Solar-powered flying boat baptised

On 25 May 2016, Diederik Samsom – a politician and nuclear physicist who graduated from Delft University of Technology – officially baptised the university’s latest solar-powered boat. After a year of hard work, the sustainable race boat, which is lifted off the surface of the water by hydrofoils, was ready to make its first official voyage in Delft waters.

The solar-powered boat was built by 24 students from different technical backgrounds. The team’s main objective is to win the Dutch Solar Challenge - the World Championship for solar-powered boats. The contest will take place from 2 to 9 July, starting with a prologue in Amsterdam followed by several stages in Friesland.
