Test of Time Award - Middleware Conference 2017
Jan Rellermeyer and his co-authors Gustavo Alonso and Timothy Roscoe (both from ETH Zurich), received the Test of Time Award at the 2017 ACM/IFIP/USENIX Middleware Conference in Las Vegas for their 2007 Middleware paper called āR-OSGi: Distributed Applications through Software Modularizationā.
About the paper
The paper was about a middleware system that could transparently distribute modular software. The key idea was that structure that software often already has (modules) can be repurposed as the boundaries of distribution and thereby a regular (modular) application could seamlessly run on multiple machines. Our system extended the OSGi standard for dynamic modules on the Java platform and was the first OSGi remote service implementation. This idea was later picked by the standardization body (the OSGi Alliance) and they developed a standard for remote services to which Jan Rellermeyer contributed.
About the conference
The ACM/IFIP/USENIX Middleware conference is a major forum for the discussion of innovations and recent scientific advances of middleware systems with a focus on the design, implementation, deployment, evaluation of distributed systems, platforms and architectures for computing, storage and communication.
