Aerospace Engineering researcher Dr. Andrea Sciacchitano received  a Veni grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for his proposal ‘Deploying Uncertainty Quantification in Particle Image Velocimetry’. The research aims to embed uncertainty quantification in the experimental design of Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV), a leading measurement technique for aerodynamic research. Currently, uncertainty of PIV data is still mostly unknown. Sciacchitano’s research will improve the usability of PIV data.

Particle Image Velocimetry for aerodynamics research

Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) is a leading measurement technique for aerodynamic research and development. The technique allows quantitative flow velocity measurements in planes or volumes. However, due to its complexity, uncertainty in PIV is largely unknown, and measurement errors remain unbounded. Within this VENI, for the first time the systematic uncertainty of PIV data will be quantified a-posteriori using tools from the Modern Design of Experiments framework.

Groups involved

The research is embedded in the Aerodynamics Section of the Aerodynamics, Wind Energy, Flight Performance and Propulsion (AWEP) Department, lead by professor Fulvio Scarano. The research will benefit from the support of the German-Dutch Wind Tunnels (DNW) and LaVision GmbH, a leading company for hardware and software solutions for flow measurements.

Veni

Veni is a funding instrument in the Innovational Research Incentives Scheme of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). It allows researchers who have recently obtained their PhD to conduct independent research and develop their ideas for a period of three years. A funding round is held every year and the grant is 250,000 euros.
