Starting 1 May 2018, the new Electrochemical Transformation of CO2 chair will commence at the Department of Process & Energy. Earl Goetheer, expert in the area of sustainable energy, has been hired as part-time lecturer. Goetheer is extremely experienced in the area of process technology and separation technology and works at TNO as principal scientist of Process Technology. He is responsible in the VoltaChem team for the Power-2-Chemicals research area. VoltaChem is an industry-driven Shared Innovation Programme for the electrification of the chemical industry and is an initiative of TNO, the Energy research Centre of the Netherlands (ECN) and the Chemistry top sector. This programme focuses on the use of renewable energy in the chemical industry for the production of heat, hydrogen and chemicals.

‘As a process engineer,’ says Earl Goetheer, ‘I come up with solutions to make processes in the chemical industry more sustainable. Reducing CO2 emissions, that’s what it’s all about. For example, by capturing CO2 from fumes and converting it into materials or storing it safely, or by using renewable electricity to make chemicals. In addition, we also study how processes can be developed more efficiently and how to achieve a higher yield from less waste.’
