Materials and the way they are used is crucial to our future

Fay de Waal, master’s student in materials science engineering

Her research project ‘You should know’ is drawing attention to sustainable social challenges such as food waste, water pollution and modern slavery. As a result of her exceptional goal, Fay de Waal has been selected to participate in the One Young World summit from 17-20 October in The Hague through a specially developed Shell Scholarship Programme.

Choice of materials
Fay is convinced that we need to tackle the issue of materials differently in the Netherlands and that we can and must make smarter choices in that respect. For example, those working on the production side have to give a great deal more thought to the ‘waste aspect’. Fay, who was born and raised in Shanghai, wants to do this by building a bridge between Eastern and Western knowledge in the area of materials science.
