‘Elevator’ wins Maassilo competition

News - 11 October 2018 - Communication BK

BK alumnus Bram van Grinsven created the winning design for the idea competition of the roof of the Maassilo in Rotterdam. Van Grinsven proposes to construct a glass floor, protruding over the edge of the existing concrete structure: creating a floating hotspot 40 meters above the harbour of Rotterdam.

Van Grinsven: “Elevator offers a unique experience of the city of Rotterdam. The glass floor protrudes over the old concrete silo walls. Visitors will feel like they are floating above the harbour of Rotterdam. The industrial atmosphere is combined with the creation of an exclusive hotspot with the most spectacular view on the city.” The judges were delighted with the design: “The design fits so well, the drawing look like the design already exists. The design is realistic, financially feasible, and short-term achievable.”

Van Grinsven wins a cash price of € 2.500,-. His design, together with the designs of the runner-up and the sustainable winner, will be explored for actual construction.

The idea competition for the roof of the Maassilo in Rotterdam started in June 2018. Designers were asked to create a rooftop design on the 10th floor of the building, and to generate creative ideas for the 6.000 m2 roof surface. In total, 60 designs were submitted.
