European Alliance in Architecture and Built Environment Research

News - 12 March 2018 - Communication BK

Five leading research-intensive European universities have joined forces in BauHow5. SABRE, Strengthening Architecture and Built Environment Research, is the first project in this alliance, focussing on developing a core curriculum for PhD education in Architecture and the Built Environment.

The alliance aims to push the boundaries of current practices and raise awareness of the value of research and entrepreneurship in Architecture and the Built Environment for the wider benefit of the economy, society and cultural life. Partners in BauHow5 are The Bartlett Faculty of the Built Environment of the University College London, the School of Architecture of Chalmers University of Technology, the Department of Architecture of the ETH Zürich, the Department of Architecture of the Technical University of Munich, and BK Bouwkunde TU Delft.

The core curriculum for PhD education developed through SABRE will fast-track formats in second-cycle education to open up new career paths in creative industries and developing collaboration models (research, education and innovation) between academia and practice. BK Bouwkunde will develop in the SABRE project a core curriculum for doctoral education in Architecture and the Built Environment by means of sharing existing courses among the partner universities, by using high quality courses from other European universities, and if necessary by adding new courses. This core curriculum is not intended to become compulsory: it should be understood as complementary to what is happening already. PhD students and faculties can use just the particular elements they need, or they can use the whole package. To facilitate participation throughout Europe, the content of the courses will be reworked into new and open formats. This will involve making an inventory, combining the best of the best, adding what is missing, and translating into open formats. In this way, the output will deliver a core curriculum for doctoral education in the field.
