First successful treatment with proton therapy in HollandPTC

News - 27 September 2018 - Communication

The first patient of HollandPTC successfully underwent proton therapy last week. After an intensive period of preparation the number of patients will now be gradually extended to six hundred in 2020, thereby significantly enlarging the treatment capacity in the Netherlands for this new kind of therapy. At the same time, an extensive research programme will start.

Proton therapy is a new way of radiation therapy against specific types of cancer. The main advantage of radiotherapy using protons compared to the current treatment is that tumours can be treated with higher accuracy, with less damage to the surrounding tissue.

HollandPTC is an independent clinic and research centre. It was founded by the Dutch medical centres Erasmus MC and LUMC together with Delft University of Technology. Holland PTC is located on TU Delft Campus.
