Highlight: Annette Duetz
There are a lot of talented people in many fields on the campus of the TU Delft, including Sports. Every month, we put one of our elite athletes in the spotlight. This month, the honour goes to sailor Annette Duetz.
Besides Applied Physics student, Annette is an Olympian. She competed in the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, together with teammate Annemiek Bekkering. She finished seventh in the 49erFX (Female eXtreme) sailing class, the female version of the 49er class. An, according to Annette, disappointing result. Not only was Rio 2016 her Olympic debut, also for her sailing class. Unlike the men, who took part in the Olympics since Sydney 2000.
It wouldn’t be a surprise if the terminology 49er or 49er FX doesn’t ring a bell. That’s why Annette will introduce you to the class briefly: “I sail in a skiff, with an asymmetrical spinnaker (type of sail) and a double trapezoid. It is quite hard to keep to boat balanced. It takes a lot out of your athletic ability. What appeals to me are the boat’s high velocity, but also the facts that it’s instable thus making it hard to control.”
High Performance team
From October 2017, Annette is part of the High Performance team of the Royal Dutch Water Sports Union (Koninklijk Nederlands Watersport Verbond, KNWV). This initiative brings (new) talented male and female sailors together in the 49er and the 49erFX class. The aim of this team is to prepare the 49er(FX) sailors to compete with the best sailors in the world, which the Netherlands haven’t been able to do yet.
“In this system, we sailed in constantly changing pairs, which was very educational. Currently, we sail in fixed teams again, in my case with Annemiek. Not only our shared experiences are important for this partnership, but also the experiences we gained independently of each other in the past one and a half year. These make us a better team.”
Prinses Sofia Cup
Tijdens de Prinses Sofia Cup van 30 maart tot en met 7 april, deed zich de mogelijkheid voor het duo voor om te laten zien welke groei zij door hadden gemaakt. De zeilwedstrijd in de wateren rondom het Spaanse eiland Mallorca was de eerste sinds hun Olympische avontuur die zij samen zeilden. In een sterk deelnemersveld wonnen zij met een ruime voorsprong ten opzichte van de nummer twee: 49 om 95 punten. “Het winnen van de cup geeft ons veel vertrouwen en laat zien dat we stappen hebben gemaakt afgelopen winter. En niet alleen wij, maar het gehele High Performance team. De andere teams uit onze ploeg waren derde, elfde en negentiende.”
Wereldkampioenschap en Olympische Spelen
“Onze grootste wedstrijd is in augustus dit jaar in het Wereldkampioenschap in het Deense Aarhus. Daar willen we zo goed mogelijk presteren, omdat hier de eerste landenplekken te vergeven zijn voor de Olympische Spelen in Tokyo in 2020. Om je als land te kwalificeren moet je in de top tien varen. Dit moet voor ons met Nederland geen probleem zijn. Ons doel ligt hoger, we gaan hier voor de winst!”
Mocht Nederland zich tijdens het Wereldkampioenschap plaatsen voor de Olympische Spelen, betekent dit niet dat Annette al verzekerd is van een Olympisch ticket. De Nederlandse kwalificatie vindt plaats in de zomer van 2019. Degene die het beste zeilt over twee wedstrijden kwalificeert zich. “Voorlopig zijn we hier totaal nog niet mee bezig. Het doel van de ploeg is eerst nog met z’n allen beter worden en van elkaar leren. Een te vroege onderlinge strijd is uiteindelijk niet voor bevorderlijk voor ons niveau.”
Topsport en studie
“Als topsporter ben je al snel geneigd om uit alles wat je doet het maximale te halen. Om die reden heb ik wel echt bewust voor een van de twee gekozen; het zeilen. Op het moment staat mijn studie dan ook op een laag pitje. Na afgelopen Spelen heb ik mijn Bachelor Technische Natuurkunde afgemaakt en ben aan de master begonnen. Afstuderen zal nog moeten wachten tot na de Olympische Spelen in 2020, als ik me kwalificeer. Naast het zeilen blijft namelijk op het moment erg weinig tijd over."
