Since the of December 2018, the faculty 3mE is the proud owner of a new advanced research instrument. In the MSE department a new electron microscope, equipped with a Xe+ ion-beam, is located to facilitate materials research in 3D. This electron microscope, the Helios G4 UXe of Thermo Fisher (formerly FEI Europe) is the first of its kind in the Netherlands.

The ion beam acts as a knife cutting any material enabling simultaneous study of the microstructure and chemical composition in 3D. Also, with this instrument all kinds of structures on a microscale can be manufactured for micro mechanical application
