Faculty Day

News - 17 April 2019

On Wednesday, April 3rd the Faculty Day had as focus Education. Members of the Education Management Team (EMT) gave some presentations about (1) the EMT after 5 years, (2) the upcoming visitation on education, (3) the Bachelor Refresh, and (4) the Master Vitalisation.

After these presentation, the Faculty staff split up into different groups for some mini workshops. The first topic was Digital Skills in the Bachelor where it was discussed that all students should have similar digital and programming skills. The idea was to create an online environment for students to practice with representative material, and during this workshop solutions and risks were further discussed. The second topic was Ethics in the Bachelor where it was discussed that Ethics will be implemented in the Bachelor programme upon request by the Executive Board. It will start with first year courses upcoming September, and during the workshop different points of attention were discussed (such as the need for training lecturers and Ethical topics in Space). The third topic was about Sustainability and include sustainability in the same way as Ethics in the curicula. The fourth topic was the MSc Vitalisation: the Core, Flex, Thesis (CFT) Framework. The intent of the workshop was to generate ideas for introducing a flexible phase in the MSc programme. However, the discussion during the workshop focused mainly on the fundamental motivation for critically looking at our MSc programme, which eventually provided some insight related to the further development and implementation of MSc Vitalization. The fifth workshop concerned "What is meant by quality in the Master". It was focused on the evaluation of one the MSc variants being considered in the MSc vitalisation, in which multidisciplinary work is emphasised. Several scenarios and useful suggestions were raised both within and after the meeting. The sixth topic was the 5W’s of Online Education were it was asked if we are targeting the right group for the right programme. Possibilities for online education was discussed, as well as potential threats leading to the question how online education can result into win-win situation.

The EMT has valued the enthusiasm and input from the Faculty and realises that unfortunately time was too short to go into much detail. As always, the EMT is of course open for other thoughts and ideas from Faculty staff and students to further strengthen the Education at our Faculty. The EMT consists of:

-        Aldert Kamp (chair EMT; Director of Education)
-        Madeleine Bos (secretary EMT; Head of Education and Student Affairs)
-        Leo Veldhuis (MSc Programme Director)
-        Bert Vermeersen (P-coordinator)
