Succesfull first run online course Sustainable Packaging in a Circular Economy

News - 14 March 2019

On Monday March 11, Jan Henk van der Werff, Manager Business Development - TU Delft Open & Online Education, presented the first results of the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) ‘Sustainable Packaging in a Circular Economy’. The development of this MOOC started already in 2017, with the support of Delft University Fund (thanks to Stichting Verpakking en Mileu). The MOOC has been launched in 2018 and the first results are now available.

In the first run, the course attracted 2.695 interested students. The attendees gave an average evaluation score of 8.2 (out of 10). “In comparison with other MOOCs, this is a result to be proud of; this is very promising for the next runs,” says van der Werff.

Attendees of the course addressed that the theory and practical examples in this course helped them to see the urgency for the improvement of packaging and that it opened their eyes towards inspiring, available solutions.

About the course

As our global population grows in size and affluence, both our collective demand for packaging materials and the waste we generate as a result increases dramatically. Currently, large amounts of packaging waste escape formal collection and recycling systems and eventually end up polluting the environment. Moreover, their material value is forever lost to the economy. The MOOC Sustainable Packaging in a Circular Economy concerns the question how we can improve the packaging system to utilize this wasted potential. Attendees learn about the design of sustainable packaging systems.
