Professor Andy Dong visiting from Oregon State

News - 15 January 2020 - Communication

From January 2020 onwards, Andy Dong will be a visiting professor at Industrial Design Engineering (TU Delft). For two years he will visit our faculty three times per year. This is made possible through our partnership with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines.

Professor Dong previously worked in the USA at the Californian College of Arts as professor and chair of the Design MBA. His knowledge on how design works in a business context is of high interest for IDE. It will further advance the knowledge we create in the KLM partnership, but we also look forward to his contributions to a wider array of research at the department of Design, Organisation & Strategy (DOS).

Andy Dong will collaborate with researcher Rebecca Price on the Design Doing partnership with KLM to quantify the ways in which the practice of design has influenced the financial performance of the company. As part of this collaboration with KLM, he will also deliver workshops on design strategy to the company's management trainees. He will also continue his long-standing collaboration with Associate Professor Maaike Kleinsmann and Professors Dirk Snelders and Erik Jan Hultink to formulate a theory of design strategy as a more general descriptive and normative claim for the strategic posture of a firm.

Professor Dong just recently started his position at Oregon State University. “In my new role at OSU, I will sort of make my own ‘IDE’ department by having a joint appointment in engineering & the business school. I am not sure if I’ll be teaching in the MBA or if we’ll have a new postgraduate design innovation program or another option, but I will be teaching engineering again.”
