TU Delft proud of high positions in the global QS Subject Ranking

News - 04 March 2020 - Communication

The World University Rankings by Subjects 2020, published today, places TU Delft in 15th place in the broad category of Engineering & Technology. In the disciplines Architecture/Built Environment and Civil & Structural Engineering, the university ranks second worldwide. The 13th position for Environmental Sciences is also noteworthy: for a number of years now, the university has been focusing on education and research in the field of sustainable energy and the climate.
In total, TU Delft has nine disciplines in the global top 20 and TU Delft is the highest ranked Dutch university in eleven disciplines.

Compliment
Tim van der Hagen, rector magnificus and president of the executive board, is very pleased with the results. “In the various rankings in recent years you can see that the competition is getting ever stronger and that new parties are competing to reach the top. The fact that TU Delft is going from strength to strength in a large number of disciplines is a nice compliment to everyone who is committed to the quality of our education and research. These lists are an inspiration for continuing to invest in quality.”

Risers and fallers
Architecture/Built Environment (from 3 to 2) and Civil Engineering (from 4 to 2) strengthen their global top positions. Other disciplines which are climbing the rankings are Engineering & Technology (from 17 to 15), Environmental Sciences (from 16 to 13), Mineral & Mining Engineering (from 18 to 15), Electrical & Electronic Engineering (from 24 to 16), Physics (from 49 to 42), Chemistry (from 49 to 42) and Natural Sciences (from 73 to 62).

Slight decreases can be seen at Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing engineering (from 4 to 5), Chemical Engineering (from 10 to 13) and Material Sciences (from 15 to 17). Earth Sciences decreases from 44 to 51-100.

It is striking that TU Delft’s position in three non-technical fields is also improving this year: Education (from 101-150 to 51-100), Arts & Humanities (from 125 to 98), Social Science & Management (206 to 183).

QS Subject Rankings
In addition to the yearly World University Ranking, QS issues separate Subject Rankings. This year, 1,368 universities were ranked in 48 subject areas. The subjects are divided into five faculty areas. TU Delft has been ranked 21 times: in all five faculty areas and in sixteen subjects. The rankings are compiled based on the following indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citation per paper and the H-index. The weighting varies per subject area.
