How enviromentally friendly is yacht building actually? Can you compare one yacht to another? And how can we ensure that all yacht builders take the same approach, so that we can ultimately reduce the footprint of yachts? Jeroen Pruyn, researcher at Maritime and Transport technology, is working with the Joint Industry Project ‘Yacht Environmental Transparency Index (YETI)’ of the Water Revolution Foundation to develop an independent energy label for yachts.

In cooperation with MARIN and TNO, he is involved in ensuring the neutrality of the label. He is working with a team of researchers to explore the possibilities and consequences of choices to ultimately map the footprint of a yacht. The first steps have already been taken. Data from 130 yachts have been collected and analysed to develop a first calculation method for the benchmark of ‘yacht operations’. Seventeen parties are involved in this project, including the knowledge institutes mentioned above, as well as yacht builders, shipyards and architectural firms. The fact that yacht builders are the first to voluntarily tackle the construction of environmentally friendly yachts in this way is unique.

Jeroen Pruyn: “I really like that this initiative comes with wide support and input from the industry itself. I feel lucky to be able to contribute with my expertise and insights in my effort to increase the sustainability of shipping in general.”
