IDE trio wins national design competition

Last year, the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science launched a competition to design the award for the newly established National Higher Education Prize (Nederlandse Hogeronderwijspremie ). While the prize is yet to be awarded, IDE students Eva Jonkers, Lin Zhou and Sanne ten Hoopen are already celebrating and look forward to seeing their design being lifted in the air by jubilant winners.

This will be the first year that the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science grants the Nederlandse Hogeronderwijspremie. By establishing this new award, the ministry wants to recognise and endorse the efforts of the best teams working in higher education – whether they be academic or professional. They will be given the IDE-designed award, as well as funding to continue and enhance their educational activities.

But it’s not just the lecturers who will be celebrating their win: the team “Design Lenz” consisting of three IDE bachelor students and winners of the design competition for the award will also be raising a glass! With their trophy “New Spark”, Eva Jonkers, Lin Zhou and Sanne ten Hoopen reflect the spark of passion for innovation and teamwork in the eyes of the prize-winning educators who inspired them.

The team is currently busy with overseeing the production process ahead of the awards for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place of each category, represented by a gold, silver or bronze iris in a glass-made eye on a dark marble base complementing the shape. The design evokes the sparkle in the eye of the educators, by means of a magnetic powder radiating from the central iris. The same inspiration led Eva, Lin and Sanne in the design of the logo for the National Higher Education Prize, in which a central symbol for education is surrounded by a stylised eye for innovation.

The work of this talented team was supported by Valorisation’s Geert van den Boogaard and Finance’s Mark van Pappelendam.
