TU Delft explores options for large-scale underground heat storage

News - 12 November 2021

In 2020, for the WarmingUP/WINDOW research project, a feasibility study (haalbaarheidsonderzoek) was carried out for heat storage with an open geothermal energy system on the campus. Findings were that such a heat storage in combination with geothermal energy would mean a significant additional reduction of carbon emissions and that the business case of the new heat system would improve considerably.

Geological layers were identified that are potentially suitable for this heat storage. Since the technology is still under development and might have a positive impact on the energy transition, TU Delft decided with her partners recently that they would develop a demo on the campus that should be made apt for future commercial applications. This utility service on the campus should also contribute to the sustainable transition of TU Delft, as well as knowledge development and use of the technology in general.
