IETF/IRTF Applied Networking Research Prize for Cybersecurity paper

News - 28 September 2022 - Communication

A recent paper co-authored by Professor Georgios Smaragdakis and colleagues from DE-CIX Internet Exchange, Max Planck Institute for Informatics, and the Brandenburg University of Technology receives the joint Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) and the Internet Research Task Force (IRTF) Applied Networking Research Prize. "The Applied Networking Research Prize (ANRP) is awarded to recognise the best recent results in applied networking, interesting new research ideas of potential relevance to the Internet standards community, and upcoming people that are likely to have an impact on Internet standards and technologies, with a particular focus on cases where these people or ideas would not otherwise get much exposure or be able to participate in the discussion. In this research, the authors analyze more than 120 thousand distributed denial of service attacks (DDoS) attacks. They show that collaboration and coordination among network infrastructure providers, e.g., Internet exchange points, has the potential to detect and mitigate up to 80% more DDoS attacks compared to current practices. They also show such collaboration can detect DDoS attacks faster, thus allowing mitigation mechanisms to be more efficient, and mitigate them at the core of the Internet, thus, reducing the impact and collateral damage of DDoS attacks.

The award talk and ceremony will take place at the IETF 115 meeting in London from 5-11 November 2022.

The awarded paper appeared in the ACM Conference on Computer and Communications Security (CCS) 2021: "United We Stand: Collaborative Detection and Mitigation of Amplification DDoS Attacks at Scale".
