How do we become less dependent on natural gas?

In its Climate Agreement, the Dutch government aims to reduce CO2 emissions by as much as 49% compared to 1990-levels by the year 2030. That’s a laudable aim, says solar energy professor Arno Smets in a new episode of science programme Atlas TV, but achieving it will be a major challenge. ‘A coal-fired power station is adjustable: you increase its output if you need more power. But with clean energy, you’re completely dependent on the wind and sun: when the wind drops and it’s cloudy, production is too low to meet the demand for energy.’ Together with colleague Peter Palensky, professor of Intelligent Electric Power Grids, Smets discusses what is needed to make our energy supply less dependent on natural gas.
