Research vision, scope and approach
The pursuit for extreme miniaturisation and precision is essential for achieving breakthrough performance for many present and future products, including consumer products, scientific instruments, machine components and systems. There is a requirement for carrying out processes at the small (micro) scale with high (nano) precision.
Examples are precise movements (optical fibre-chip couples project), dosing of liquids (nanopipett project) or sensing material properties down to the moleculair level (nanopore project). A high density of operational functions will be needed, and the required large numbers of micro-scale functions must be integrated in larger scale systems.
As additional benefit of microfabricated instruments and tools is the small mass, which renders these attractive for space application and planetary science.
