dr. ir. Arjo (A.J.) Loeve

After obtaining my Master degree in Mechanical Engineering, specialized in Biomedical Engineering, at the TU Delft, I received my Doctor's degree for my thesis "Shaft-Guidance for Flexible Endoscopes" (or PDF 18.7 mb) on June 12, 2012.

The combination of tomorrow's advanced technology and medicine makes this research area exciting and even life-saving. Whether it is by designing or improving a surgical instrument or prosthesis or by investigating the mechanical properties of the human body, we are always working to obtain knowledge and create solutions that provide more and better possibilities in medicine.

My current focus is on developing easy-to-clean medical devices and on extending my research line “Eningeering for Forensics”, in which we work on devices and workflow for the forensic field. This appeared to have an extremely strong resemblance with the medical-technological field.

My vision: The key to successful solutions for the forensic- and medical-technological fields is in 1) dissecting problems until their core is found and understood and 2) solving these core problems with the simplest (but not simpler) solution that can be developed.

Entirely new is the MOOC (Massive Open Online Course) named “Forensic Engineering – Learning from Failures” that I developed together with my colleagues Karel Terwel (Faculty CiTG) and Michiel Schuurman (Faculty L&R). In this free online course to be found starting 17 oktober 2017 owww.edX.org you learn how to perform a structured investigation to discover why a technical system failed. And, at least as important: By doing this well, you also learn how to prevent failure in the future.

Currently I work at the TU Delft as: 

  • researcher with the Netherlands Forensic Institute on a broad range of research topics in "Engineering for Forensics",
  • researcher with the Erasmus MC on the validation of a new sensor for measuring blood pressure pulse waves,
  • lecturer and educational block coordinator for the Bachelor Clinical Technology.

Besides my work as a researcher, I am a free-lance photographer (www.arjoloeve.nl), wind sailor, speed skater (roads & ice), and hobby musician.
